Hiking & Trails Near Morro Bay

Bluffs, peaks and a very good short climb.

The best walking near Morro Bay splits between the bluff trails at Montaña de Oro and the volcanic peaks of the Nine Sisters immediately inland.

Black Hill, inside Morro Bay State Park, is the highest-value short walk in town — a modest climb to a summit with the entire bay, the sandspit and the Rock laid out below. It takes well under an hour and is the single best orientation to the geography.

Montaña de Oro State Park, south past Los Osos, has the finest coastal bluff walking in the region. The Bluff Trail is flat, easy and spectacular; Valencia Peak is the steeper option with the long view. Spooner's Cove is the usual starting point.

Closer in, Cerro Cabrillo offers a steeper scramble among the Morros, and the Elfin Forest boardwalk in Los Osos is a short, flat, accessible loop through a rare stand of dwarf coast live oak overlooking the estuary.
