Morro Rock

The Rock is a volcanic plug roughly 23 million years old — the northernmost and largest of the Nine Sisters running inland toward San Luis Obispo.

Morro Rock is visible from essentially everywhere in town, which makes it a poor destination and an excellent landmark. You can drive or walk out along the causeway to its base, where there is parking, a beach on the north side and the harbour entrance on the south.

Climbing the Rock is prohibited. It is a peregrine falcon nesting reserve and a site of deep cultural significance to the Salinan and Chumash peoples, and access above the base is restricted accordingly. Watching the falcons work the cliff face is a better use of the time in any case.

The harbour-entrance side is the more interesting one: the channel between the Rock and the sandspit is where the fleet runs in and out, and on a big swell the water against the breakwater is worth standing around for.
